UNESCO World Heritage: Volcanoes of Sicily, Self guided trekking
These walks take you to where the sea meets the sky, leading you to discover the Sicily´s volcanoes: Etna, Vulcano and Stromboli, which are Unesco World Heritage. The itinerary will take you up the volcanoes and give you a chance to rent a boat to go around the islands. Climbing Etna will be an unforgettable experience, visit the jewel town of Taormina will be amazing with its narrow charming streets and its magical Greek-Roman amphitheatre.
1st day: Catania - Milazzo
Arrival in Catania, private transfer from the hotel to Milazzo (1h30). Accommodation in town.
2nd day: Lipari (3 hours walking +290m -290m) 8km
In the morning hydrofoil to the nearby island of Lipari (1h). Arrival and accommodation. Time at disposal to visit the lively island: visit the magnificent Archaeological Museum which houses a valuable exhibition of underwater archaeology or walk in the west side of the island to discover hidden part of the island. Overnight (2 nights) with breakfast.
3rd day: Lipari – Vulcano – Lipari (3 hours walking +390m -390m) 6 km
Day at disposal to enjoy the wonderful beach of Lipari or take the hydrofoil, to discover the close island of Vulcano. You can also go up to the Great Crater where the fumarole of the active volcano can be admired. The climb to the top through a hard path repays with magnificent views on the others six Aeolian islands. Overnight stay in Lipari.
4th day: Lipari - Stromboli (4 hours walking +400m -400m) 10 km
In the morning hydrofoil or boat to Stromboli island (1h), check-in to the hotel and free time to visit the lovely village of San Vincenzo or to take an optional boat ride around the island to visit the enchanting village of Ginostra, one of the loveliest corners of the entire archipelago. in the late afternoon leave for the excursion to the volcano* with certified volcanological guide. Overnight in hotel. (2 nights)
*The volcano is 924 mt high and according to Italian law, when it is not erupting people are allowed to climb up the top accompanied by a certified volcanological guide. At the moment the climb is permitted. The guides reserve the right to cancel the climb according to safety considerations (weather, data from volcano which is constantly monitored, physical condition of walkers). The walk is quite demanding and requires a torch for the descent which takes place in the dark.
5th day: Stromboli (6 hours walking +924m -924m) 10 km
Free time to relax on Stromboli´s black beaches or walk to the "Sciara del Fuoco" where you can see Stromboli´s volcanic activity with a wonderful panorama view of the craters.
6th day: Stromboli – Milazzo – Taormina
In the morning hydrofoil from Stromboli to Milazzo (2 h). Private transfer from Milazzo harbour to the famous town of Taormina. An emotion that takes your breath away is what comes to everyone when they see the Greek-Roman Theater, this unbelievable work by mankind that stands on the mountain and from where your gaze drops down to the deep blue sea and to Etna, an unsettling presence that manages to stay in harmony with the landscape. Accommodation in the area (2 nights).
Included a Wine Tasting at a local winery.
7th day: Etna (4,5 hours walking +500m-500m) 9 km
Excursion on Etna volcano to admire places and paths that the volcano Etna only offers. Amazing view of the Ionian coast of Sicily. Overnight stay.
8th day: Breakfast and departure.
