Discover the south east end of Italy. On this walking tour you will not only experience the unique countryside between the Adriatic and the Ionic Seas, but also the friendliness and hospitality of the southern Italians.
The countryside is rich in culture. The Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, Habsburger and the Bourbons have all left their mark in the region.

Characteristics of the tour
This tour is suitable for everyone with a good basic physical condition and a bit of an orientation capability. You will hike mostly on shepherd’s paths, gravel roads and paved roads.

Day 1: Arrival at Matera

Individual arrival to the first hotel in Matera – also known as city of Sassi (stone houses carved out of the caves and cliffs). The historic centre consists partly in these Sassi listed since 1993 as UNESCO World Heritage.

Day 2: Matera round trip and transfer to Alberobello / approx. 3 hours / ascent: approx. 400 m difference in altitude / descent: approx. 300 m

From the city of Sassi you will get to the city of Trulli. Today’s hiking day leads you to the „Terra delle Gravine“, unique canyons in the Murgia-high-plateau, united to a nature reserve. In the afternoon transfer to Alberobello. Take your time and stroll through the Trulli – typical, small, dry-stone buildings.

Day 3: Alberobello – Cisternino / approx. 5-6 hours / ascent: approx. 150 m difference in altitude / descent: approx. 150 m

Today you will walk from the Valley d’Itria into the coastal plain and Cisternino. This little town on a hill welcomes you from far. With clear weather you may admire the view from Piazza Garibaldi over Martina Franca, Locorotondo and Ostuni. Cisternino is part of the
1244 Borghi più belli d’Italia, a private association, promoting small historical centres of Italy.

Day 4: Cisternino – Ostuni /approx. 5-6 hours / ascent: approx. 250 m difference in altitude / descent: approx. 400 m

You leave Cisternino behind you and hike through olive groves and wine yards to Ostuni, the „white city“, admiring the view over the Sea. The centre of Ostuni lies on three hills. Visit the historic centre with its picturesque maze of alleys and stairs amidst the typical white whitewashed buildings. The Piazza della Libertà is the centre of the historic centre and the border between old and new town.

Day 5: Ostuni – Otranto / approx. 5-6 hours / ascent: approx. 130 m difference in altitude / descent: approx. 130 m

A short transfer takes you to Torre dell‘Orso, starting point of today’s hiking tour. Along the coast through vastness always with one eye on the Sea you will arrive to Otranto, one of the most beautiful travel destinations in the Salento. The cathedral with its mosaics and the fortress Castello Aragonese will invite you for a visit. Enjoy your evening in the narrow alleys of the historic centre.

Day 6: Otranto round tour / approx. 5 hours / ascent: approx. 250 m difference in altitude / descent: approx. 220 m

Today you will explore the surroundings of Otranto. After a short transfer you will reach Porto Badisco. This little bay will invite you for a swim before you hike back – along the coast – to Otranto.

Day 7: Otranto – Lecce / approx. 2-3 hours

Lecce is waiting for you! The capital city of the Salento has a lot offer: un undoubted beauty with lots of buildings and churches to visit. Next to Naples Lecce is the Baroque metropolis of the South. Approximately 30 churches and innumerably palaces are waiting to be visited. Don’t forget to visit also the Amphitheatre and the Roman theatre- both probably built under imperator Augustus.
You can also hike along the coast and have a bath before reaching Lecce for your last night of the hiking tour!

Day 8: Departure
