Five unforgettable hiking days in one of the largest Abruzzo parks. We spend the night and visit two villages on two different sides of the Majella. We will walk following the footsteps of Pietro da Morrone ascended to the papal throne as Pope Celestine V.

We start our journey at 600mt above sea level and walk up to 2137mt  a.s.l. We hike over the beautiful Orfento valley, then on the mountain we´ll visit two of the most significant Celestinian hermitages and experience the beauty of the view from the summit. All this without forgetting that Abruzzo is a land of wines, cold cuts and cheese!

Celestinian hermitages, San Bartolomeo in Legio Hermitage, Caramanico Terme,  Majella National Park, Mount Porrara, Palena

DAY 1: Orfento Valley Ring (7 km, elevation gain 300mt)

Late morning arrival at the accommodation in Caramanico Terme. At 1.30pm briefing with the guide and first hiking excursion from Caramanico to the "Vallone" bridge, passing through the Orfento valley. Natural Reserve since 1971, the Orfento Valley  is an exception among the deep and arid valleys of the Majella, because of the abundance of water. The variability of the environments makes it a treasure of biodiversity: the European otter lives in the valley, on the cliffs we find the Peregrine Falcon and the Pinguicola fiorii, while above the 2,000 mt. the Apennine Edelweiss. Return to the accommodation, visit to the village of Caramanico, aperitif and dinner at Osteria.

DAY 2: From Caramanico to San Bartolomeo in Legio hermitage (17 km, elevation gain 800mt)

After breakfast, we leave Caramanico towards Decontra of Caramanico. After passing the hamlet of Decontra we cross a plateau where we find some examples of dry stone huts (Tholos). After a stunning overlook to the Santo Spirito valley we arrive to the hermitage. The complex has very ancient origins (prior 11th century). Around 1250 a.C. Pietro da Morrone, future Pope Celestine V, rebuilt it and used it often. The frescoes above the entrance portal date back to this period. On August 25th a solemn procession is still held in which the statue of the saint is carried in the arms.

DAY 3: From Caramanico Terme to Palena

After breakfast, we leave Caramanico with a transfer, during which we can enjoy the view along the way through the National Park. We cross the Orta river valley, in Passo San Leonardo (Pacentro) and we pass through Campo di Giove village. Along the itinerary we stop for lunch and taste the local products. We reach Palena in the afternoon, the rest of the day is free.

DAY 4: From Palena to Porrara Mount (10 km, elevation gain 1100mt)

After breakfast we leave for the first summit. With its 2137 mt above s.l., Porrara Mount develops as the southern spur of the Majella. The source of the Aventino river originates from its slopes. The path will offer a privileged observation point from the Mount Amaro on the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise.

DAY 5: Visit of Madonna dell´Altare hermitage (6 km, elevation gain 400mt)

After breakfast, we  visit the hermitage of Madonna dell´Altare, probably the first place where Pietro Angeleri lived as a hermit before taking the vows. Here the future Pope Celestine V reached Majella, stopped in a cave and began the real hermit life. After a coffee we say goodbye to each other and head to our departure points.
